Avoiding card crime

To help keep your card details safe, follow these simple precautions:

Shopping on the internet

Here's what to keep in mind when you shop online:

  • only shop with reputable companies.
  • only enter your details on secure web pages – if you're using Internet Explorer, look for the padlock sign at the bottom right of your browser window.
  • never send an email containing your card details or PIN.

For added security, we've created Lloyds TSB Clicksafe, a free service that gives you extra protection against card crime. Learn more about Lloyds TSB Clicksafe.

Shopping over the phone

When you give out your card details over the phone, remember:

  • never disclose your PIN (not even to your bank or the police).
  • you may be asked for the last three digits on your card's signature strip – only give this information to companies you trust.

Using a cash machine safely

When using a cash machine there are some things you should do to keep your card details and your money safe.

Choosing a cash machine:

  • if someone nearby looks suspicious or you feel uncomfortable before using a cash machine, choose another.
  • if there is anything unusual about the cash machine, don't use it and report it to the bank immediately.
  • if a cash machine is being used, stand a reasonable distance away – if the cash machine has a 'zone' around it, keep this space clear.

Using a cash machine:

  • stand close to the cash machine and always shield the keypad to avoid anyone seeing you enter your PIN.
  • always be aware of your surroundings – if someone is crowding you, cancel the transaction and go to another machine.
  • don't accept help from strangers and never allow yourself to be distracted.

Leaving a cash machine:

  • put your money and card away quickly before leaving the cash machine.
  • if the cash machine does not return your card, report it immediately to your card issuer.

Protecting your identity

Make sure your details don't fall into the wrong hands:

  • when you throw away receipts, make sure that your card details can't be read – use a paper shredder or rip them by hand.
  • know who you're giving your card details to – and don't be afraid to ask them why they need this information.
