Using internet banking safely

Follow these simple precautions to help keep you safe and secure when you bank online

Keep your password and memorable information safe

  • Never write down your password or memorable information, or store them on your phone or computer.
  • Never give out your password or memorable information, even to a family member or someone who claims to be from Lloyds TSB International. We will never ask you for this information.
  • If you think that someone else knows your password or memorable information, change it immediately. Log on to internet banking and use the "Change password" and "Change Memorable Information" options in the left-hand menu.

Choose a secure password

  • Choose a "strong" 6 to 15 character password — use a mix of letters and numbers (like c4t or d0g), that you can remember without writing down.
  • Don't use words that others could guess (such as the name of a family member or pet).
  • Change your password regularly.

Keep your computer secure

  • Keep your software up to date, especially your operating system and browser. Check for updates on the software company's website. Find security updates for Microsoft products.
  • Use personal firewall software (such as McAfee, Symantec and Zone Alarm) and anti-virus software (such as McAfee, Norton and Sophos).
  • Don't open unexpected email attachments, particularly if the file ends .exe, .pif or .vbs — these are likely to be viruses.
  • We recommend that you don't download software if you aren't sure of the source — this includes websites which prompt you to click "yes" or "OK" to run a program or install a browser plug-in.

Take care logging on in public places

  • Use a private computer for internet banking whenever possible — publicly accessible computers, in places such as Internet cafes, are not always secure.
  • Don't choose or change your password or memorable information on a computer in a public place.
  • If you're using internet banking in a public place, never leave the computer unattended and make sure nobody can see what you type.

  • Look for a small padlock icon, in the locked position, in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen.
