How does the Money Fund work?

The Money Fund is a relatively low-risk way to grow your money — a flexible, low-cost alternative to a traditional deposit account. There are 5 currencies to choose from.

This is a great option for people who have savings in a number of different currencies and want to consolidate them in a single home.

You can invest anything from £5,000 (or currency equivalent), and can add amounts as small as £500.

You can check your investment value online at any time with our online portfolio service. You'll also get a paper statement every 6 months.

Whenever you want to access your money, just sell some or all of your shares in the Fund — there are no penalty fees.

We have a dedicated call centre where you can speak directly to a fund representative.

What will I be investing in?

Cash: by pooling the money of many investors, the Money Fund can invest in deposits available on the Eurocurrency market — the market European banks use when borrowing or lending the currencies of different countries.

Each currency class invests in cash deposits in that currency. It's free to switch between the different currency classes (up to a maximum of 12 times a year).

Read our guide to the different types of investment.

How long should I plan to invest for?

The Money Fund suits short, medium or long-term investors.

Because your investment increases due to the accrual of interest payments received by the Fund, you're protected from most of the market fluctuations that make other funds risky short-term investments.

What's the level of risk?

Cautious: there is only minimal risk involved but returns may be modest. Purchasing power of your money may be significantly reduced by inflation.

Who is the Money Fund for?

Choose the Money Fund if you're looking for:

  • capital growth: the Money Fund is a flexible option to help you grow your money while minimising risk.
  • easy access to your money: typically you'll have a lump sum to invest, and won't need a regular income from it — but might need to access it at short notice.
  • free money transfers: you often move money between countries and currencies, and would like to save on the fees involved.

Who is the Money Fund not for?

The Money Fund is not the right choice if:

  • you need a regular income: if you need an income from your investment, for example to supplement a pension, take a look at our income funds.
  • you're looking for high returns: if you're willing to take greater risks for potentially greater returns, you can find a fund that suits you using our Savings and Investments Finder.

Investors should be aware that the price of shares may go down as well as up. Whilst the price of a share will normally rise as income accrues in respect of underlying investments, such price may fall in certain circumstances such as a substantial change in interest rates.

An investment in a currency other than the shareholder's own base currency will be subject to the movements of foreign exchange rates, which may cause an additional favourable or unfavourable change in value. Consequently, investors may, on selling their shares, receive an amount greater or less than their original investment.
