Personal overdrafts
Apply for a planned overdraft and find out about unplanned overdraft fees
If your account offers overdrafts, there are two types available:
- planned overdrafts — these must be requested in advance
- unplanned overdrafts
Planned overdrafts
If you know you'll need some extra money in advance, contact us to arrange a planned overdraft.
We'll agree your overdraft limit. You'll pay interest on your overdraft amount, but no fees.
You can ask to increase your planned overdraft limit at any time.
If you go over your agreed overdraft limit we'll charge you unplanned overdraft fees — but every account has a buffer zone, so if you slip just a few pounds over you won't be charged. The size of your buffer zone depends on the type of account you have.
Unplanned overdrafts
If you try to make a payment that would take you into the red or over your planned overdraft limit and buffer zone, we'll treat this as a request for an unplanned overdraft.
If we grant you the overdraft, you'll need to pay interest together with daily and monthly fees.
If we decide not to grant the unplanned overdraft you will not be able to make the payment and we'll charged you a fee.
Unplanned overdrafts can be expensive so, if possible, always arrange a planned overdraft in advance.
